Alois Ferscha ist Vorstand des Institutes für Pervasive Computing sowie Leiter der Exzellenz-Initiative „Pervasive Computing“ an der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, Leiter des Forschungsinstituts für Pervasive Computing (RIPE, Hagenberg) und Leiter des ARC Research Studios „Pervasive Computing Applications”. Zu seinem Spezialgebiet „Distributed, Mobile, Pervasive Computing“ sind bislang mehr als 130 wissenschaftliche Publikationen erschienen. Bei namhaften nationalen und internationalen Forschungsprojekten hatte Alois Ferscha die Projektleitung inne. Aktuelle Projekte umfassen unter anderem Software-Frameworks für Context Computing, drahtlose und mobile Ad-hoc-Netzwerke sowie Sensor-Aktuator-Netzwerke. Ferscha arbeitet auch anwendungsorientiert; dabei geht es vor allem um das Verschmelzen von Informationstechnologien mit unserer alltäglichen Umgebung und mit Gebrauchsgegenständen (Smart Spaces und Smart Things). Ferschas Forschungsgruppe entwickelte beispielsweise die bei Marathons eingesetzte Möglichkeit, über die Positionierung eines Laufschuhs SMS-Informationen zur sekundenaktuellen Platzierung eines Läufers zu erhalten. 1992 erhielt Ferscha den Heinz Zemanek-Preis für hervorragende Forschungsarbeiten auf dem Gebiet der Informatik. Er war als Gastforscher an den Universitäten Turin und Genua sowie an der University of Maryland at College Park und der University of Oregon tätig. Er war Mitglied zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Programmkomitees. In diesem Jahr ist Ferscha designierter Vorsitzender der Konferenz ISWC 2009 (IEEE International Symposium on Wearable Computers).
