Gerhard Widmer

Gerhard Widmer (geboren 1961) hätte eigentlich Pianist werden sollen (1974 gewann er einen Ersten Preis in einem nationalen Klavierwettbewerb), doch mit 15 Jahren entschied er, dass Beethoven langweilig sei. Er studierte Informatik an der TU Wien sowie Computer Science und Musik an der University of Wisconsin, Madison (USA). Seit 2004 ist er Professor und Vorstand des Instituts für Computational Perception an der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz. Widmer ist weltweit einer der Pioniere der interdisziplinären Forschung an der Schnittstelle zwischen Computerwissenschaften, Artificial Intelligence und Musik. Für diese Arbeiten erhielt er verschiedene nationale und internationale Auszeichnungen, darunter einen der höchsten österreichischen Forschungspreise, den mit ca. 1 Million Euro dotierten START-Preis (1998). Auch seine Einstellung zu Beethoven hat sich inzwischen geändert.
