Helmut K. Anheier

 

Helmut K. Anheier (Ph.D. Yale University, 1986) is Professor of Sociology, Heidelberg University, and Academic Director of the Center for Social Investment and Professor of Sociology. From 2001 to 2009 he was Professor of Public Policy and Social Welfare at UCLA`s School of Public Affairs. He holds the honorary title of Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. He founded and directed the Centre for Civil Society at LSE (1998-2002), the Center for Civil Society at UCLA (2001-2008), and co-founded the Center for Social Investment at Heidelberg. Prior to these appointments he was a Senior Research Associate and Project Co-director at the Johns Hopkins University Institute for Policy Studies, and Associate Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University. Before embarking on an academic career, Dr. Anheier served as Social Affairs Officer to the United Nations.

His work has focused on civil society, organizational studies, globalization, comparative methodology, and policy analysis. He is author of over 300 publications, including over thirty authored and edited books. He has won several national and international awards, including the 2006 PNP Best Book Award of the American Academy of Management. He is currently researching the role of civil society internationally, and interested in methodological questions at the intersection of globalization, civil society, and culture. Dr. Anheier serves on the board of several scholarly and philanthropic organizations.
