How topical is Early Music?

The period of “early music” from the time between the Middle Ages and the baroque continues to be tremendously popular with artists and audiences alike. What are the reasons for this? Illustrating their presentation with recorder music from the time between 1350 and 1750, Oman and van Heerden will be discussing a number of topics. Should early music be performed exclusively at historical venues or are modern concert halls also acceptable? Are historical instruments a precondition to guarantee authenticity? What place should early music be assigned in the training of musicians?
