She trained as a recorder and baroque oboe player in Cologne and Amsterdam under professors Günther Höller, Walter van Hauwe and Helmut Hucke, and was a prize winner in the Tonger Competition in Cologne (1985) and in the International ARD Competition in Munich (1989). A founder member of the L'Orfeo Baroque Orchestra with its conductress Michi Gaigg, Carin van Heerden continues to play with this ensemble and appears as a soloist in concerts in Europe and in South Africa. She conducts the L’Orfeo Wind Ensemble, with whom she has just finished recording Josef Myslivecek’s harmoniemusik (to be released by cpo in 2009). She lives in Austria and cooperates with different ensembles and baroque orchestras (K. Junghänel, T. Koopman, A. Curtis, H. Max). Van Heerden taught recorder at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg between 1993 and 2004 and at the Kölner Musikhochschule between 2004 and 2008.
