PISA – What truths does research generate?

The PISA Study is taken into account in political decision making. The question therefore needs to be raised how significant the findings of this empirical study actually are and what consequences need to be drawn from them. Is it possible to infer from PISA that one quarter of all adolescents are deficient in reading skills? Is the conclusion permissible that Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz have significantly better scores than Vienna? And does it follow from this that tuition in Linz is better? Does Austria need a comprehensive school system?
These and similar questions will be discussed in the lecture and we’ll be getting to the core of the matter.
A series of lectures organized by Institut für Soziologie/Abt. für Theoretische Soziologie und Sozialanalysen der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz in collaboration with Linz 2009 European Capital of Culture in the Kepler Salon.
